How the Bikram Sambat calendar works
Bikram Sambat runs roughly 56 years and 8 months ahead of the Gregorian calendar, so an AD year maps onto two BS years and there is no single number you can add to convert a date. The new year falls on 1 Baisakh, which lands on 13 or 14 April.
The harder problem is that BS month lengths are not calculated from a formula. They run from 29 to 32 days and are fixed each year by the Panchanga Nirnayak Samiti, then published. That is why a converter has to carry a lookup table of every month of every year, and why this one stops at 2083 BS: beyond that, published sources disagree about which years have 365 days and which have 366, and a converter that guesses is worse than one that admits the limit.
The tithi shown with each result is computed from the actual positions of the sun and moon rather than looked up, following the Nepali convention of naming a day after the tithi in progress at sunrise in Kathmandu.
Questions people ask
- How do I convert Nepali date to English date?
- Pick BS → AD, choose the Bikram Sambat year, month and day, and the Gregorian date appears immediately. The conversion is exact, not an approximation, because it walks a published table of month lengths.
- How many years ahead is Bikram Sambat?
- About 56 years and 8 months. Between 1 January and mid-April, subtract 57 from the BS year to get the approximate AD year; for the rest of the year, subtract 56. Use the converter for the exact day.
- When is Nepali New Year?
- 1 Baisakh, which falls on 13 or 14 April in the Gregorian calendar. It marks the start of a new Bikram Sambat year.
- What date range does this converter cover?
- 1 Baisakh 2000 BS (14 April 1943) through 30 Chaitra 2083 BS (13 April 2027) — the span over which three independent published datasets agree on every single month.
- Why do some Nepali months have 32 days?
- Because BS months track the sun's passage through the zodiac rather than a fixed count. A month lasts as long as the sun spends in one sign, which varies from about 29 to 32 days.
